Coffee Break with Katie: Sunday Nourishment

I was asked recently why I believe in going to church regularly.  The reasons are numerous, but I will briefly explain why I think it's so important.  Yes, I am an ordained minister in the American Baptist Churches, so my view has a "ministerial bend" if you will.

So why should you go to church every Sunday?  The most common argument is that I hear is that someone's relationship with the Lord is what's important, not whether or not they go to church.  While I agree that personal relationship with Jesus is important, it does not give you the ability "skip church" because you are in a "better" place with the Lord.

Here's the most important part...Jesus called us to be in relationship with Him and with each other.  Jesus was all about fellowship.  He spent time teaching His disciples and He spent time being with the people.

What you miss out by not going to church is the most intricate part of being a member of God's family: fellowship and communion.  I'm not speaking about the Lord's Supper Communion, but communion of believers.  The Bible says that "Where two or more are gathered, there I will be."

Going to church on Sunday is about seeing your fellow church family, praying with them, and hearing the Word of the Lord read.  God wants us to recharge our spiritual batteries.  You don't go out into the woods to chop up logs all day without having a good breakfast.  Why would you start your week without the most important part, a blessing from the Lord?!

I feel that celebrating each others joys, concerns, and prayer needs is just a small part of the journey...but one of the MOST important parts.  So if your feeling disconnected from the Lord, take a step back into your church and join in with the fellowship of believers.

I wish I could find a way to say that to a few children that I've raised! They are all off on their own "spiritual quest" it seems these days. I guess in some ways that is normal, but it is frustrating.

Kath - It can be frustrating...but you have to hold out hope. Jesus never gives up on us...why should we give up on Him?
