I have spent a significant amount of time devoted to making buttons in my studio. While not all of them are listed in my store, several are. Many people still wonder what you can do with a button. Some people feel that buttons are not practical. Others feel that buttons are "out of style" or are a flash back to an old fashioned era. Today, the idea of a snap has replaced buttons in most dress styles, save for men's dress shirts, polo shirts, and jeans.
But still today, buttons have hundreds of uses. Today's most popular uses for "unique buttons" or "one of a kind (OOAK)" buttons are as accents. Here's just a few examples below.
- Quilters implement unique buttons into their quilts that match their pattern or add intrigue to their piece.
- Scrapbookers use them to decorate their pages, or make unique clasps for the front of their albums.
- Journal makers & book makers use them as closures to their books and journals...thereby allowing customized details into every original piece.
- Knitters use them as bow accents on their handmade items.
- Fabric crafters use them as ornamental details, closures, or accent parts.
Buttons come in all different shapes, sizes, colors, and textures. They can be made from almost anything from wood, plastic, clay, beads, resin, and the list goes on. Buttons come with a myriad of holes: 2, 4, and even 6 in some cases. Some buttons don't even have holes, but rather a loop or two on the back.
Have you ever wondered why we have buttons on suit coats, uniforms, and cuffs? It started a very long time ago in England with Queen Victoria. She insisted on putting buttons on her guards uniforms. Why? During dinner they would wipe their mouths on their sleeves and the Queen thought this was inappropriate behavior. She had buttons sown on every cuff sleeve of every guard, so they could not longer wipe their mouths on their sleeves.
