All Decorated for Christmas

Well....Christmas is just around the corner!  Here at the Oskin House, we are all decorated.  The first Sunday of Advent my husband, Pastor Luke, has preached on the "Hanging of the Greens" and the symbolism behind some of our most cherished Christmas decorations.

Perhaps my favorite is the legend of the Christmas Tree.  There are several legends, some involved St. Boniface...but my personal favorite is the Christmas Tree Legend of Martin Luther.  One night as him and his children were journeying through the woods just before sunset, the sun glistened in radiant beams through the branches of the evergreens that dotted the hillside.  Martin Luther explained to his children that the branches of the evergreen remained green all year because God wanted them to continue to grow and to continue to provide life for the forest.

The legend says that the very next night, Martin Luther returned to the hillside and cut down a small sapling.  He took this tree home and put it in his house during the winter months, to remind him of the everlasting love of God.

But now for the tough part!  Do you know why we put lights on our trees?  Because long ago, before Thomas Edison and electricity and the lightbulb, it was hard to see at night.  It was said that as the monks  would travel throughout Europe to touch people for Christ; in the center of their camp they would bring an evergreen tree.  At night, they couldn't read from the Bible because there was no light...so at dusk they would hang candles from the tree and light them to give off enough light that the monks could read the Word of God before bed.  True?!  Legend says so.

That being said, here's a few pictures of some of my favorite decorations in our home.

This is my seasonal tree.  I change it EVERY month.  Usually I do different things with it, but this is my favorite decoration....my antenna topper Christmas Mickey Mouse Ornaments.  How cute is this tree?

This is what sits under our tree.
My hubby and I put our wish lists in the cute felt envelopes, then we pick gifts for each other based on what we put in our envelopes.

Here's a closeup of the tree itself.
I'm selling the extras of this ornament on eBay...click here to buy some!

This was my Christmas Present from my Mom & Dad last year.
It's a Clothtique Santa.  He stands about 2.5' tall.

In traditional German style...to remember my German family far across the "big puddle."

My Grandma's nativity, given a second life in my house.  She hand made this over 30 years ago!

A winking Santa & all our Christmas cards we've received.
This Santa is a duplicate of the large 2 foot one my Mom had in our home growing up.  This Santa is only about a foot tall.

And finally what you've all been waiting for....
Our Christmas Tree!
This was a hand-me-down tree from my Grandma Dillon.
It fits PERFECTLY in my living room!

Our doggies dog toys are underneath it...

Santa Mickey looks out our bay window.  He's watching over things...

...A view from the office...

The tree at night-time!

So pretty!!!
