I've done show for about 8 years now (about 6-10 a year). I have had a variety of experiences and soon hope to write a blog that is about solely how to succeed and plan for a craft show. Until then, here is my best advice to a newbie, but especially other polymer clay artists.
#1 - BEFORE you set ANYTHING up....find the bathrooms!
#2 - TAPE DOWN your knick knacks! If someone bumps your table and they all topple, you could end up with several breakages.
#3 - Group some things seasonally (all snowman together) and other things by price.
#4 - Keep ALL small things and delicate things near the middle. Kids will grab ANYTHING and EVERYTHING they can get their hands on.
#5 - Make a $1 "bucket" -- I did this last year and it included my "mistake" pieces, pins, hair barrettes, and other miscellaneous things that perhaps didn't sell as planned. PEOPLE LOVE $1 items!! And they're more likely to buy something if they are sitting with 2, $1 items in their hands!
#6 - ALWAYS remain positive & smile at everyone. People can tell if your having a bad day or if sales are lower than expected.
#7 - Have skin like an elephant. Relax, there will be people who HATE your work and think it's dumb. There will also be people who LOVE your work and think you're the best. And there will be people in the middle who will fingerprint all of your items and leave you breathless as you wait for that sale.
#8 - You can NEVER take too many business cards. I took 250 to my last show thinking it would be enough and was sorely disappointed as I ran out halfway through my day.
#9 - Talk to people! But NOT about yourself. Ask them if they're having a good time, if they've found some good things, and compliment them in some way. Buyers like to know that you are a REAL PERSON and that you are NOT there solely for a sale...even though that's not quite true. If people sense a "connection" with you, there are a hundred times more likely to buy something.
#10 - HAVE FUN & RELAX. The day can be long and tedious, take your notebook and jot down ideas....if someone asks for something you don't have...challenge yourself to make it for the NEXT show!

Great tips! I hope to do a show someday.
This is such a giant help! Thanks so much! It's the little grabbing hands that drive me out of my mind!
